Quilt coats that I’ve made - Part 3 (the hooded mammoth flannel one)

And now for my most favourite and most worn quilt coat of them all- my party on the back/ flannel lined/ chambray outside/ huge pocket with hoods one- this one !

This is my definite go-to quilt coat. The mammoth flannel lining and oversized hood means it keeps me nice and warm- and I always get compliments on it which means I get to answer "I made it" when I get asked where I got it from :-)

I used the Simplicity 8467 pattern- this one can be quite tricky to find now so the New Look 6585 is quite similar (it has slightly different sleeves but has the same oversized hood). I've written lots of blog posts over on Scribbly Gum to talk about how I made the pockets and flying geese.

I found the pattern to be quite oversized- according to the measurements, I should have made the 16 (I'm about a size 10 Australia/ 6 US for reference) but I found this WAY too oversized. By the end, it was closer to the 6 (pattern size).

And of course, I had to make Duffy a matching one. I used one of his existing quilt coats and just traced around it for size then made ties for the front and for under his chest.

We used to wear it together in Bundanoon but I'm not sure if Melbourne people would think it's as cute as the country siders did :-)

I love the oversized pockets- perfect for pretty much anything! If I was to change one thing about them though, I probably should have used a stiff interfacing just to give them a it of structure- they sometimes get a bit floppy if I put too much in them. But they are even big enough to fit my laptop!

I found joining the hood to the arms a bit tricky- i've made this pattern a few times now and I just can't get it right, it doesn't matter how many times I read the pattern! I've ended up just hacking it together and I don't think you can tell! I've had a few people contact me with the same problem, so if you do happen to use the Simplicity 8467 pattern and can easily attach the hood to the body part, let me know your secret!

Even though I finished this quilt coat about 18 months ago (and have been wearing it consistently since then), i've only just properly finished it in the last few weeks- I hadn't finished hand sewing in the internal binding (covering up the internal joins) until then, but now that it's done (and honestly took me no more than 40 minutes- why did I wait so long!?). I'm so glad I finally got around to doing that step!

If you ever have any questions about making a quilt coat, please feel free to ask- quilt coats are one of my most favourite things of all to make so always happy to share my experience.
