My first quilt coat!

After seeing so many gorgeous quilt coats on instagram, I made my first quilt coat in 2020- I didn't follow any of the rules so it took a fair bit of finessing but I eventually ended up with this one

I used Robert Kaufman Essex Linen in Indigo for the body along with some gorgeous offcuts from Ink and Spindle. The Kaufman Essex Linen is a 50:50 Cotton Linen blend. I started with the Simplicity 8467 pattern but changed it quite a bit (I cut off the hood, added different pockets, down sized it substantially and also added the "V" Front.

  • If you'd like to see the debacle that was the process of making this quilt coat (spoiler alert, the pattern isn't true to size, you can check it out here

  • If you would like all the details on how to make this one, you can click here.

Duffy looks like he is pretty impressed with my quilt coat, don't you think? :-)

Here are a couple of progress shots!

My very first pocket- I loved making this as each step was a little project that came together at the end!

And here are all the pieces before I sewed the quilt coat together ! As you can see, the front piece is not in this photo as this is the one I changed quite a bit! I love the details on the sleeves and the little square on the arm as well :-) I did a diagonal grid for the quilting on most of it (1" apart) with some extra features on the sleeves (straight lines and squiggly lines).

It's fully lined on the inside with the same Kaufman Essex Linen in indigo.

And here is the final version of me wearing it, more than two years after working it- this is one of my favourites that I wear all the time- I love that the fabric is a little bit thicker so its quite structured and of course the huge pockets have room for everything (they are perfect to pop a few groceries in if you are doing a quick shop- although I always feel like i'm shoplifting when I store them in there until I reach the check-out!). I also like that it's relatively neutral so really matches with anything! (Please excuse my awkward backyard modelling photos).
