From Sawtooth Star to Ohio Star- making your quilt blocks on point

If you are making the Sawtooth Star Pattern in large throw (12 blocks), here is a fun little twist if you’d prefer your stars on point.

A quick disclaimer- it does involve cutting some of your blocks in half and even one into quarters and if you are a true quilt perfectionist or part of the quilt police brigade, you probably don’t want to follow these instructions as it’s not a perfect way of making a quilt- you lose 1/4” seam allowance around the border so your stars are slightly more covered by the binding than they would otherwise be. But because the cut pieces are only around the border, I think you’ll agree you don’t really notice and you end up with a lovely, albeit slightly different quilt.

The final dimensions of this quilt are 58” x 87” - it’s long and skinny but actually the perfect size for going lengthwise on a queen or king bed :-)

This tutorial assumes you have made each of your quilt blocks but haven’t sewn any together.

Start by setting aside 8 quilt blocks. These will be left whole.

With your remaining 4 blocks,  you are going to cut 3 blocks directly down the middle on a diagonal as follows (for the rest of this tutorial, these will be referred to as half blocks):

And cut one block into quarters on the diagonal as follows (for the rest of this tutorial, these will be referred to a quarter blocks):

Now it’s time to sew our (diagonal) rows together

Row 1- quarter block

Row 2- half block —> full block —> half block

Row 3- half block —> full block —> full block —> full block —> quarter block

Row 4- quarter block —> full block —> full block —> full block —> half block

Row 5- half block —> full block —> half block

Row 6- quarter block

We are always using 1/4” seams. When you are attaching a half block to a full block, attach these two sides:

When you are attaching a quarter block to a full block, attach these two sides:

And that’s it, your quilt top is done! I hope you found this a fun little way of making an (on point) sawtooth star quilt :-)
